Director’s Notes

The double soul of this story, made up of cruelty and passion, is contained in the title of the film. On the one hand, an archaic and fierce society, dominated by the violence of primitive laws that govern ancient mafia feuds that have never really died out, on the other the power of love that upsets and subverts, a spark which triggers a new war but also the desire for a different life. That of Ti mangio il cuore is an archetypal story that speaks of love, revenge and death, but also of a land of overwhelming beauty, Gargano, torn and bloody by an unknown and ruthless mafia. A world in which the spiral of violence seems to overwhelm everything and even destroy love, but not Marilena, who is not afraid to live her passions, her desires and does not intend to bow to a destiny already written. Because a different fate is possible. [Pippo Mezzapesa]

The original novel

Journalist and writer, Carlo Bonini has collaborated with Il Manifesto and Corriere della Sera where he has dealt with judicial news, and currently works as a special correspondent for the newspaper La Repubblica. He published his first book in 1998 The red togafollowed the following year The flower of evil. Banned in Milanbiography of Renato Vallanzasca, who inspired M. Placido’s film in 2010. In 2006, he wrote with G. D’Avanzo, with whom he often collaborated, the narrative reportage Guantánamo, the market of fear and in 2009 A TAXI. All cops are bastards, of which Stefano Sollima made the film adaptation. In 2013, with G. De Cataldo, he published the black Suburraset in the capital, from which the homonymous film was made, again directed by Sollima, which was followed by Rome night (with G. De Cataldo, 2015) and the report The killer island (2018).

The official synopsis of the novel: For some time in Italy there is only the Sicilian mafia, the Camorra and the ‘Ndrangheta. There is a fourth mafia, which today is the least told and the least known. In the lands that stretch from Gargano to San Severo, from Manfredonia to Cerignola, the families of the Foggia Society and the Montanari del Promontorio command. Their tentacles have now expanded to huge international sales. Their violence is archaic and bestial. From the 1970s to today, there have been 360 murders, 80% of which remain unsolved. A massacre which left dozens dead and which finds its engine in the ten-year bloody quarrel between two families. That of Carlo Bonini and Giuliano Foschini is an investigation which, intermingling legal acts, testimonies of investigators, magistrates and victims of this hell, becomes a dramatic story, populated by indelible characters.

Carlo Bonini’s novel “Ti mangio il cuore” is available on Amazon.

In the night I hear gunshots
words are weapons
They fly very far
Lights out, a little girl
He hides between the notes
play queen
Bullets like songs
Quickly into the light, I’m speechless
I promise the sun always rises
Even if it doesn’t burn
Salt is good for me, I don’t lose confidence
I will stay closer and closer to my dream
This fear is a trip and maybe I need it
Be ready to have courage
Throw myself into the fire without being hot
And I run towards me
I know that I will join you
Without a trace
Without rules
And I run towards me
I know that I will protect you
beyond the blood
Only for love
Bullets as intentions
They cross the memories without interruption
I promise a flower
He was also born where the earth burns
This water is good for me
I don’t lose faith
I will stay closer and closer to my dream
Risking is like a game and maybe I need it
Be ready to have courage
I walk in the fire without heat
And I run towards me
I know that I will join you
Without a trace
Without rules
And I run towards me
I know that I will protect you
beyond the blood
Only for love
