In June 2016, I attended the trial of a woman who killed her little girl by abandoning her on a beach in France at high tide. I thought that the woman wanted to offer her daughter to the “sea”, a “mother” far more powerful than herself could be. Inspired by a true story and animated by an imagination steeped in mythological figures, I wrote this film about a young writer who witnesses the trial of an infanticidal mother, with the aim of writing a contemporary reinterpretation of the myth of Medea. But nothing will happen as he had planned: the impenetrability of the accused will lead the young woman to reflect on her own ambiguity in the face of motherhood. I wanted to make this film to explore the unspeakable mystery of being a mother. [Alice Diop]
