The 12 Italian films that will compete for the designation of the candidate for the title to represent Italy in the selection of the best international film (formerly best foreign film) at the Oscar 2023.

The shortlist includes films by Susanna Nicchiarelli, Francesca Archibugi, Pupi Avati, Ciro De Caro, Emanuele Crialese, Giovanni Basso, Mario Martone, Michele Placido, Charlotte Vandermeersch & Felix Van Groeningen, Laura Samani, Gianni Amelio and Roberto Andò.

Below you will find the complete list of biographical films dedicated to Dante Alighieri, Caravaggio, Santa Chiara d’Assisi and the reconstruction of the trial for plagiarism suffered by the writer, screenwriter and playwright Aldo Braibanti. The list also includes two adaptations of novels: “Les Huit Montagnes” by Paolo Cognetti Premio Strega 2017, winner of the jury prize at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and “Il Colibrì” by Sandro Veronesi, winner of the Premio Strega 2020.

Giulia, who is constantly torn between the need to feel at home, loved and a wild and sacrosanct desire for freedom, literally finds herself in the middle of a road and begins, in her own way, to seek refuge and a place in the world. . Between an illusory desire for motherhood and a few expedients to make ends meet, she spends the hottest days of a torrid Roman summer with characters whose existence is empty, elusive, pure and marvelous like her. The selection committee, set up at ANICA at the request of the Academy, will meet to vote on the designated title on September 26, 2022. The announcement of the Shortlists is scheduled for December 21, 2022, the Nominations will be announced on January 24, 2023 while the Oscar ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023.
