Claudia Gerini, Matilde Gioli, Margareth Made’, Ludovica Nasti, Lina Sastri and Valeria Solarino recount the Sophia Loren myth in the documentary Sophia! directed by Marco Spagnoli and produced in collaboration with Rai Documentari.

Participating in the realization of this successful tribute to our greatest diva – said Fabrizio Zappi, director of Rai Documentari – has been a privilege for us, as well as an exemplary initiative in editorial terms, since it marries the portrait of a loved and respected Italian person all over the world with the construction of a fresco of our society, which retraces the entire second half of the last century”.

The official plot

Supplemented by the photographic and video archives of LaPresse, which has only 19,000 shots of the two Oscar-winning actresses, “Sophia!” is the intimate and epic story of the birth and affirmation of a great actress: love for Carlo Ponti, flirtation with Cary Grant, devotion to Vittorio De Sica, friendship and professional complicity with Marcello Mastroianni, stubbornness with whoever she wanted to becoming a mother at all costs, the victory of numerous international awards, made her the last great Diva of international cinema, an icon of Italian excellence loved all over the world. By following Sophia Loren over time, the docufilm oscillates from Italy from the Second World War to today, between misery and splendor, poverty and wealth, living up close the fable of a sort of post-modern Cinderella, determined not only to be good but perfect in everything, to the point of receiving an award with Walt Disney, being directed by sacred monsters like Charlie Chaplin, Stanley Donen and Robert Altman and working alongside stars like Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Peter Sellers. A documentary film created to celebrate the career and the myth of this great actress with immense charm and talent which is also based on the testimony of six actresses who, in addition to having grown up in Loren’s admiration, tell and analyze her artistic career and – in a certain sense – spiritual heritage: Claudia Gerini, Matilde Gioli, Margareth Madè, Ludovica Nasti, Lina Sastri and Valeria Solarino. All in a “non-place” like the Cinecittà Studios, which were in a way the artistic cradle of the young Sophia. It is here that we see her walking in a red dress, very young, unknown and full of hope, and it is still there, more than sixty years later, that other actresses reflect on her figure, her qualities unique and timeless. Beauty, charm, rigor, resilience, sense of family, loyalty, honor, discipline constitute the narrative dimensions of a unique and fascinating story which has at its center a great Diva who knew how to be, above all, a great woman, unequalled. , unmatched. , who has become an Italian icon of international cinema, to whom we are all grateful for the charm and beauty with which she accompanied her art.

Director’s Notes

For the first time in the history of cinema, a documentary tells Sophia Loren as it has never happened before. Perhaps that could not have happened either, given that our production collects with passion and care an extraordinary archive that shows an unpublished and “sumptuous” portrait of the actress born in Pozzuoli. The last great Diva of our cinema, indeed, is sublimated in more than 80 years of images which accompany Loren at the turn of very different eras, but always triumphant, perfect, extraordinary. This is how Sophia Loren is told in our film through the words of Loren herself, through a selection of all the material collected from the 1940s to today in the archives of LaPresse, Associated Press, INA, CBS, ARTE, TVE, Cinecittà and Rai Radiotelevision Italiana. A journey to discover the myth of a “unique” actress, made entirely of precious and sometimes rare archival material, commented on by the words of Sophia Loren herself in more than half a century of interviews and testimonials relating the most important moments of his private life. life and career. From the many films in which he was directed by a great master like Vittorio De Sica to winning the Oscars for the interpretation of La Ciociara, from the birth of two children to the memories of working with Marcello Mastroianni, of being directed by Charlie Chaplin for Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
