The original tale

“Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” is the fourth story in the “If Blood Runs” anthology and features clairvoyant detective Holly Gibney recently played by Cynthia Erivo in HBO’s The Outsider TV miniseries.

A teenager discovers that a dead friend’s cell phone, buried with the body, is still communicating from beyond the grave. Craig gets a job with retired Mr. Harrigan when he was just nine years old, watering plants and reading for the old man, who has retired to the small town of Harlow, Maine, after a successful career in business. Years pass and Craig at one point buys an iPhone for Harrigan with the winnings of a scratch card the old man had given him. Harrigan is initially hesitant to accept the phone, but then decides to take advantage of it. When Mr. Harrigan dies, Craig puts the phone in the man’s pocket to be buried with him. One evening when he misses his deceased friend, he sends him a voicemail and to his surprise, he receives a reply message…

The official synopsis of the anthology: There are different ways to say, when it comes to news, and they are all legendary: “Beat the front page monster”, “It’s more news Man bites the dog than the Dog bites the man” and of course “If blood flows, it sells”. and the bloody opening images of the news. Yet among the millions of horrified viewers in front of the screen, there is one who picks up a discordant note. Holly Gibney, the investigator who has already had borderline experiences of reality with Mr Mercedes and the Outsider, observes the scene of the crime and realizes that something is wrong, that the first sent to the scene of the massacre has something wrong. Thus begins If Blood Runs, the standalone sequel to the best-selling The Outsider, starring the fearsome Holly in her first solo instance. he long story about King’s favorite detective (as he himself writes in his final note) is just one of four that make up the collection. From Mr. Harrigan’s phone, where life and technology intertwine in unusual ways, to Chuck’s life, inspired by a billboard, to Rat – who plays with the very nature of a writer’s talent – the stories in this collection are startling, out of the box, sometimes sentimental, maybe even out of time. In a word, sublimely Kinghien.

The “If Blood Runs” anthology is available on Amazon.
