Benito Mussolini and its rise will be at the heart of the new television series directed by the British director Joe Wright.

The show, which will be simply titled ‘M‘, will be inspired by the international bestseller Mr. Son of the Centurywritten by Antonio Scurati and already winner of the prestigious Strega Prize in 2019. The series will trace the birth of fascism in Italy and the personal stories of the well-known dictator with an innovative approach, which has not failed to spark heated debates both in Italy and abroad.

The producer of the show Lorenzo Miéli he comments on the choice to adapt the literary work:

The writer put on paper, with facts and documents and everything else, that Mussolini was the one – and the only one – who created what we now call populism and fascism.“.

Mieli then commented on the choice to involve a international name as director Joe Wright:

Fascism is something that concerns everyone today. It’s been relevant for the past few decades, but now it’s especially relevant around the world. And it’s interesting because before Trump, the Anglo-Saxon culture thought fascism was something way off their radar. But now it is. That’s why I thought of an Anglo-Saxon director. I also like how he handled politics in Darkest Hour and I like how he manages to switch genres.“.

According to producer Wright, he particularly enjoyed the source material, with which he hopes to replicate the critical and public success achieved with The darkest hour in 2017. The Winston Churchill-centric wartime biopic actually won Gary Oldman the Oscar for Best Actor. Among Wright’s other works we also remember Atonement, The soloist and the most recent Cyrano.

The series will be written by Stefano Bisesformer writer of Gomorrah And The new popein collaboration with David Serinowho has to his credit the writing of 1992. As of now, no name related to the casting has yet been announced, but Mieli assures that Mussolini will be played by top-notch talent.
