The story of Donnie Darko is one of the most interesting of the last 20 years of cinema: released in October 2001, the film by Richard Kelly was heavily penalized at the box office as a plane crash was shown from the trailer and only 6 weeks had passed of the attack on the twin towersbut thanks to home video and the 2004 Director’s Cut, it has established itself as a cult following.
In addition to its already special production history, Donnie Darko has always offered fans great stimuli for its complex plot, made of time travel and mysteries not always very clear but with a lot of charm. According to an interesting theory, however, we may never fully understand the real meaning of the movie.
As often, offering this different take on the film is a Reddit user: according to this person, Donnie Darko it’s not about wormholes, end of the world or mental illness, but a decidedly more “social” problem. The cult featuring future star Jake Gyllenhaal would indeed a film against drunk driving.
In fact, it’s been noted that at the start of the film, Donnie walks past a road sign warning of the upcoming Halloween fair – a sign sponsored by MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). When in the end the rabbit Franc kill Donnie’s daughter, Gretchenit was speculated that it was an accident due to an altered condition of the driver.
The whole story would therefore be nothing more than a condemnation of this type of behavior: “At the climax of the film, Frank, who presumably was drunk driving (though not explicitly stated), he runs over Gretchen while driving like a madman and loses control after avoiding death of grandmother – the user writes – Look down the panel and the events combined: it’s Halloween, it’s the fair, it’s about drunk driving and the death of a teenage girl who only had her mother“.
An intriguing social theory, of which the director himself was also questioned. During an interview on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the film’s release, Richard Kelly first ironically claimed that all the theories circulating are false (the protagonist Donnie is dead all the time, he is hallucinating, all the film is a dream.etc), but on the specific question he said: “I am against driving after drinking And if people don’t want to give it up, I hope they call an Uber“.
For fans of theories about the most famous films, this does not sound like a no to the reading offered by the hypothesis that we have told you. What do you think about it? Donnie Darko can it also be read in this key? As always, let us know in the comments.
