How many times, browsing comic book fairs and other events in the sector, have you been speechless in front of thematic groups – so beautiful and so numerous – that they seem straight out of a book, a film Or a TV series?

Probably, then, you will also have come across incredible ones inspired by The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. When it comes to Tolkien, the mind immediately flies to the blockbusters of Peter Jackson’s two trilogies, which continue to give emotions and suggestions even after many years. In the wake of this boundless passion, two important Italian associations were born that embrace Tolkien’s imaginative world and turn it into reality, personifying and interpreting the protagonists who made the professor’s works immortal: The Fourth Era and Middle-earth Cosplayers . and discover them more closely, from The Fourth Era. Next month it will be the turn of ‑ Middle-earth Cosplayers.

When and how did the idea of creating a group of cosplayers on the theme of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit come about? “Formally, we were born as the Tolkien Reenactment Association in 2016 to respond to the growing participation of people in cosplay gatherings focused on Professor Tolkien’s books, Peter Jackson’s cinematic transpositions and, in general, on the world of fantasy. But already in previous years the first group of cosplayers from all over Italy had formed, from which everything started”.

What was your most important goal? “Over the years we have participated in many cosplay competitions, winning many awards also on the international stage, for example at Hobbit Con in Bonn, Germany. However, perhaps the biggest step was the gathering at Lucca Comics & Games in 2017, attended by more than 80 people. One of the biggest gatherings of Tolkien cosplayers in Italy!”

How would you describe yourself? “We are currently around forty partners. Unfortunately, the drastic drop in events over the last two years of the pandemic has curtailed our business, but we expect to pick up again this year with the launch of the new Prime Video TV series. We don’t have “assigned” characters, everyone is free to choose who they want to interpret with maximum freedom. When it comes to costumes and props, many are made by our talented associates who have learned to sew and shape in wood, leather, iron and all the other materials usually used by cosplayers, while others are bespoke, handcrafted products of the highest quality and fidelity to originals”.

What are your expectations for the new series The Rings of Power? “We are very curious to see Middle-earth in this new transposition. We hope that it is faithful to Tolkien’s writings and that it will help to spread the passion for Middle-earth even more by attracting new associates. And we obviously can’t wait to see the new costumes to be made!”
